History
Wharton Electronics began life 45 years ago in 1975 manufacturing electronic stopwatches and related equipment for commercial and sporting applications. Started by two brothers, Eric and Robert Wharton, the company, in cooperation with national governing bodies, developed several specialised timepieces, used internationally in sporting events, including Equestrian cross-country and carriage driving, Cycling Road Time Trials, International Motor Rallying and other motorsports.
During the 1980s and 1990s, the company expanded its geographical reach and today work with over 40 international partners. Our primary markets have expanded to include:
- Banking and commodity trading
- Military and commercial command and control
- Education, leisure and sports sectors
- Health sectors and Pharmaceutical production
- Transportation sectors
Alastair Wharton, the company’s Managing Director, joined after leaving Aston University with a joint honours degree in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science. Alastair heads up our innovation and technology department and offers industry-leading solutions to our partners.
The company has built an international reputation of reliability, outstanding quality and unrivalled technical support, with more than 80% of sales through our existing customers.
There are numerous Wharton Electronics products in use today in time and reliability-critical applications operating 24/7 after more than 15 years, or more than 130,000 hours, from the time of original supply. This level of reliability is one of the many reasons why Wharton Electronics continues to thrive globally after 45 years.

We design and manufacture our own unique and extensive range of time-related products in our Thame, Oxfordshire head office and factory.
Our export sales account for over 70% of our production. Wharton products have been supplied to customers in more than 150 countries worldwide.
